5 Things You Need to Know About UHS

#1 — It’s designed just for you, students

University Health Service is an on-campus clinic designed specifically for student use. There is a health fee that covers all the services UHS offers, but if you’re a full-time student, it’s included in your tuition. Part-time students are able to choose between paying the semester health fee, or they can be seen on a fee for service basis.

#2 — Your health fee covers more than just doctor’s appointments

UHS offers much more than primary care, injury and illness visits. Your health fee also covers women’s health care, behavioral health appointments and physical exams. Counseling and coaching sessions for nutrition, health and wellness, tobacco treatment and sexual health education are also available.

#3 —There is a phone information nurse and an on-call physician

If you’re not sure whether you need to make an appointment, or you’re too sick to leave your bed, UHS still has the tools to help you. The phone information nurse’s hours are from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. They can offer tools such as home treatment recommendations, they can triage medical issues, schedule your appointments and inform you of lab results – all over the phone. There is also a physician on-call 24 hours a day for emergency after hours services.

#4 — 'Keep or Cancel' policy

It’s important to keep in mind that UHS stands by their keep or cancel appointment policy. If you are a no-show for your appointment, meaning you never call to cancel, UHS will charge you $20.

#5 — UHS offers (and encourages) vaccinations

Some vaccinations, like the Meningitis vaccine, are required for students who are living on campus. If you’re interested in getting some other vaccines, or if you want doctors here to have your information, you can upload your immunization records to MyUK for your UHS providers to look through. Throughout the year, there are also flu shot clinics that are free for students with a valid UK Student Insurance Plan, and discounted at $10 with a valid student ID.
