Boomslang – A Celebration of Sound and Art

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 8, 2010) – WRFL-FM 88.1, the University of Kentucky’s college and community radio station, is excited to announce that Lexington will host the second annual Boomslang Festival Sept. 10–12, 2010. Boomslang is a three-day multi-venue festival extending WRFL’s mission to bring innovative, noncommercial music of various genres to Central Kentucky. The line-up includes a mixture of national, international, regional and local musicians, as well as a number of satellite events celebrating experimental art of all forms.

Acts confirmed include influential minimalist composer Rhys Chatham; Australian-born composer, producer and musician Ben Frost; Rangda, a new instrumental supergroup of psychedelic proportions consisting of Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Comets on Fire), Sir Richard Bishop (Sun City Girls) and acclaimed free-jazz drummer Chris Corsano; genre-bending experimental psych-folk collective Akron/Family; Detroit proto-punk pioneers Death; San Francisco psych masters Wooden Shjips; Dutch classical composer and lute player Jozef van Wissem; and Thee American Revolution (featuring Robert Schneider).

The line-up also includes Glass Candy, Harlem, Naam, Wolf Eyes, R. Keenan Lawler, Sapat, Zak Riles, His Name is Alive, City Center, Diminished Men, Jews and Catholics, Cymarshall Law, Burning Star Core, Warmer Milks, Phantom Family Halo, Everyone Lives Everyone Wins and many others. Additional events will include haute couture art installation, film screenings (including the Kentucky premiere of “Secondhand Sureshots”), literary events, a kid’s music event, an interstellar cosmic journey orchestrated by Everyone Lives Everyone Wins and the eclectically curious, always exciting Boomslang Carnival.

Tickets for various events will range from free to $25, with weekend passes available for $40. Boomslang tickets are available online through ticketfly.com; at the Buster’s Box Office (899 Manchester St.) during regular Buster’s hours (typically after 5 p.m.); and at the University of Kentucky Student Center Box Office starting Sept. 1. Discounted UK student tickets are only available at the Buster’s Box Office and the Student Center Box Office with a valid UK student ID.

WRFL, University of Kentucky’s student-run radio station, celebrates 22 years of independent music in 2010. We are also celebrating a recent long-awaited power upgrade – from 250 to 7,900 watts. The coverage area now includes Georgetown, Frankfort, Versailles and Stamping Ground. WRFL is broadcast live 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year and is managed by a student-run staff and a host of community volunteers.
