Ph.D. Candidate Selected for Accounting Consortium

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 12, 2012) — Marcus Doxey, a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Kentucky's Gatton College of Business and Economics, recently was selected to attend the American Accounting Association's (AAA) Doctoral Consortium by the Von Allmen School of Accountancy.  The prestigious annual consortium, sponsored by the American Accounting Association, the Deloitte Foundation, and J. Michael Cook, selects just one accounting Ph.D. student from each school.

Doxey was one of only 90 students from across the country and around the world to participate in this year's event held in Lake Tahoe, Calif.  According to AAA Director Tracey Sutherland, "The doctoral consortium is the most important program the association puts on."

The five-day gathering consists of networking opportunities, presentations, small groups, and question and answer sessions led by internationally recognized scholars in accounting.  Included on the list of these acclaimed scholars is UK's own Linda McDaniel, professor and Von Allmen Endowed Chair of Accountancy, who was selected to co-chair the event next year. 

The objective of the doctoral consortium is to improve the quality of future accounting education and research.  This is done by selecting doctoral candidates from a broad cross-section of universities allowing them to interact with other candidates and recognized leaders in the field.  The participants are exposed to a wide range of philosophies and current issues in accounting allowing for a more enriching experience for the doctoral candidates.

Doxey graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2005 and then went to work for a regional accounting firm in Lansing, Mich.  After passing the CPA exam and being licensed in 2006, he continued to practice public accounting in audit, tax, and IT audits until 2009.  In 2009, Doxey was awarded one of the 30 Accounting Doctoral Scholars fellowships offered nationwide.  With the funding he received from this award Doxey chose to study auditing at UK and is anticipating completing his Ph.D. in 2013.

"Being selected to attend the consortium is highly prestigious and a distinct honor since only one student from each school can attend and the number of programs represented is limited," McDaniel said.  McDaniel, together with her co-chair Teri Yohn from Indiana University, will be in charge of selecting speakers, faculty and students who attend the 2013 event.

The faculty members selected are well known and established in their research.  In 2012, 12 members were from U.S. institutions and five were from international universities.  There were 85 U.S. students and five international students selected this year which allowed for diverse communication at the consortium.  "Not only does the consortium provide valuable information for students, it is also a chance to make long lasting relationships with people who are coming out on the market at the same time and may be working in the same research areas" McDaniel said.

"I was greatly honored that the Von Allmen faculty provided me with the opportunity to represent UK at the doctoral consortium in Tahoe," Doxey said.  "I was able to meet some of the greatest researchers in accounting, and I made contacts that will further my own research in the future."
