Quilting Revives American Spirit at the University of Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 12, 2012) — Architect turned quilter, Luke Haynes defies the definition of traditional quilting with his contemporary pieces of art within functionality. The exhibit opens today, Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Rasdall Gallery with a reception beginning at 6 p.m. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Seattle native uses cloth to portray a higher form of art to entice nostalgia. Haynes' project themes include America’s culture and history, gender bias within culture, use of household textiles and self-portraits, all exposed through a unique use of imagery.

“This is SAB’s first cultural arts exhibit of the year,” said Gabrielle Dudgeon, Student Activities Board vice president of promotions. “We are proud to have Luke Haynes represent his American art and iconic images in our gallery.”

The Rasdall Gallery is a free art exhibit space located in the University of Kentucky Student Center. The Luke Haynes exhibit closes on Thursday, Sept. 27.
