Painting the Campus Purple – Relay for Life 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 21, 2013) — At the University of Kentucky, we usually “see blue.,” but for one evening, the campus will see purple to honor those who have battled cancer.

At 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, survivors and loved ones will gather at the Johnson Center Field to CELEBRATE, REMEMBER and FIGHT BACK against cancer. The event lasts 12 hours because “cancer never sleeps.”

“Those who have cancer are fighting non-stop for their lives,” said Bridget Shrigley, student and marketing director of UK’s Colleges Against Cancer organization. “Some of those individuals may never get a break from cancer, while others may be lucky enough to be in remission.”

Shrigley expressed enthusiasm about this year’s theme – Disney. Not only will there be Disney-themed games and activities for entertainment, but also participants are eligible to win a number of prizes.

The event is more than just a fun time. It begins with a “survivor’s lap.” Anyone who has heard the words, “you have cancer,” is invited to walk a symbolic and moving lap around the track. Not only does this portion of the night remind participants why they participate, but the “Luminaria Ceremony,” in which bags bearing the names of those who battled cancer are lit around the track as darkness falls, also inspires relay participants.

Although it is recommended that at least one team member stay on the track for the duration of the night, it is not required by all or any team members to stay. However, those who stay will not regret their dedication. Those who attend the event and raise at least $100 receive free food and drinks from sponsors like Raising Cane’s and Starbucks.
