UK Medical Students Host Hispanic Health Fair

LEXINGTON, KY (May 20, 2010) — The University of Kentucky College of Medicine Class of 2013 will host the 11th annual "Feria de la Salud" health fair 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 23, at the E.S. Good Barn on the UK campus.

Feria de la Salud is an opportunity for the Greater Lexington community to provide multidisciplinary care to the underserved and rapidly growing Hispanic population in Central Kentucky. This annual event provides free health screening services for blood pressure, cholesterol, vision, bone density, oral hygiene, mammograms and stroke.

Health information materials also will be available in Spanish.  Local physicians and health care professionals as well as members of the UK College of Medicine Class of 2013 will be on hand to provide care to attendees.

"Last year, medical professionals and community partners provided health screenings and services to more than 700 people, making this family-centered event the single largest community outreach project at the UK College of Medicine," said Fiyin Sokoya, health fair coordinator and member of the Class of 2013. "In 2010, we aim to broaden our scope in the Hispanic community and set new precedents in health screening for this underserved population."
