Panel Discusses Adoption, Foster Care

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 17, 2016) — A panel of University of Kentucky professors will discuss their personal and professional links to adoption and foster care 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in William T. Young Library's UK Athletics Auditorium.

Panelists for “Personal and Professional Connections to ‘Orphan Train’: A Panel Discussion with Faculty on Foster Care and Adoption” include Melissa Stein, assistant professor in gender and women’s studies; J. Jay Miller, assistant professor in social work; Rachel Farr, assistant professor in psychology; and Holly Hapke, senior lecturer in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics.

Panelists will discuss their personal stories with foster care and adoption as well as their professional research and work in foster care and adoption. They will also discuss how they have used this year’s Common Reading Experience novel, “Orphan Train,” in their classes. Additionally, they will discuss the implications of the novel and the current climate around foster care and adoption, what that means for college campuses, and how to support students who have experienced adoption and/or foster care.
