LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 14, 2016) — University of Kentucky faculty and staff, students, along with family and friends and the general public, are invited to the LiveWell 5K run/walk beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Legacy Trail at Coldstream Park.
Hosted by UK HR Health and Wellness, the annual LiveWell 5K run/walk sees hundreds of participants cross the finish line after completing 3.1 miles — in their own time.
“We call it a run/walk because this is an inclusive 5K where there’s no pressure to finish in under 18 minutes or under an hour,” said Mario Hughley, a UK wellness specialist who coordinates the LiveWell 5K.
Hughley added, “It’s a great first-time 5K because the atmosphere celebrates physical activity at all levels. Everyone takes about 6,000 steps when they complete the 5K and that’s an important achievement all around.”
All participants will receive a free LiveWell 5K dri-fit shirt. Additional prizes will be awarded for top finishers, overall and in age divisions — and most improved overall, a new prize category this year.
“Many participants return year after year, and we see this new prize category as a way to champion successes that happen over time,” Hughley said.
The LiveWell 5K donates a portion of the proceeds to a different beneficiary each year. Beyond the Blue will receive proceeds this year. This UK Center for Community Outreach program leads initiatives and events for individuals to take a stand against poverty on a global and local level.
“We’re glad to support a student-driven organization that shares in this event’s mission to serve and connect with the community outside of UK,” said UK HR Health and Wellness Manager Jody Ensman. “Supporting campus partners is an important way we strengthen our UK community, and it’s great to see faculty, staff, students and the Lexington community come together for this event.”
Register by 4 p.m. Friday, April 14, and pay a $20 entry fee ($5 pre-registration discount). Step Up Challenge participants may receive an additional $5 off, making entry only $15, by using a special code emailed recently from UK Health and Wellness.
