UK celebrates Body EmPOWERment Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2024) – The University of Kentucky is celebrating Body EmPOWERment Week Oct. 21-25. The week, hosted by Prevention, Outreach and Wellness Education Resources (POWER) housed in the Office for Student Success, is dedicated to encouraging body empowerment regardless of size, shape, color or ability.
“Weight stigma is linked to an increased risk of mental health conditions and substance abuse. We also know that those who are living with disabilities, victims of violence and even social norms in media and in our families play a role in our relationship with our bodies,” said Meghan Wolf, a student wellness coordinator for POWER. “While students can connect with health and wellness coaching through POWER to focus on intuitive eating and body image, as well as nondiet focused dietitian services through the Counseling Center, this week is aimed at showing students that our campus partners are also supporting the mission for inclusive resources and recognizing how body image shows up and can have an impact in many facets. We want students to know that we are here and encourage healthy relationships with food, movement and body image without stigmatizing rules and restrictions.”

We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds.
