Cardiology Fellows Recognized at Kentucky's American College of Cardiology Annual Meeting

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 11, 2012) - Two UK HealthCare Cardiology Fellows were recognized at this year's meeting of the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (KY-ACC).

Dr. Matthew Wiisanen (with Dr. John Gurley) won first place for his poster on ultrasound-accelerated thrombolysis for the treatment of acute pulmonary embolism.

Second prize went to Dr. Eric Wallace (with Dr. Khaled Ziada and Dr. Charles Campbell) for his poster on fibrinolytic therapy versus primary PCI for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in Kentucky; a single center experience.

In all, 29 posters were submitted, with 19 selected for presentation. The posters can reflect any scientific research physicians have done and are judged on scientific merit.

The KY-ACC annual meeting is an opportunity for cardiovascular health care providers in the area for an annual update. The meeting covers topics relevant to many in cardiovascular medicine. For 2012, the meeting focused on "Hot Topics in Cardiomyopathies."

Founded in 1949, the ACC now boasts 37,000 members in the U.S. and around the world. It is the guiding force in the cardiology community for education, research, and setting quality and practice standards. All specialties are represented by the organization, from adult cardiologists to pediatric cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, researchers and academicians.
