'Frankfort Ladies' Raise $22K for Breast Cancer

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2010) − The Frankfort Country Club's Ladies Golf Association raised $22,000 to support breast cancer research, through its eighth annual "Rally For a Cure" golf tournament held in June.

On Monday, representatives from the association visited Lexington to present a check to the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center, the tournament's designated local beneficiary.

"Coming here to present the check to Markey is like the icing on the cake for us," said Monika Clark, a 21-year breast cancer survivor and chairwoman of the committee that organizes the tournament each year. "It was very important to us that the money be donated locally. We are also very committed to supporting research, so that someday a cure can be found and future generations of women won't have to live in fear of this disease."

At a reception at Markey's Comprehensive Breast Care Center on Friday, Clark and several other members of the committee presented a check for $22,000 to Crystal Kendrick, clinical manager of the breast center, and Dr. Mark Evers, director of the Markey Cancer Center.

"We are very grateful for all of your efforts," Evers said during the check presentation. "There is some terrific research going on here, and it is vital that we have support from the community."
