UK Students to Present Their Discoveries

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 8, 2009) - Students and faculty members from one of the University of Kentucky's most exciting programs for undergraduates will present a semester's worth of discoveries this week at the Discovery Seminar Program (DSP) Showcase. The fall 2009 showcase will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in the UK Student Center ballrooms.

Every semester, students from each seminar participate in the showcase to demonstrate what they have learned or created throughout the semester. This year, students and faculty members from 22 different seminars will present their discoveries.

Now in its 14th year, the UK DSP seeks to connect students with professors at UK who offer seminars on such topics as the environment, religion and politics, social inequality, community service, music and art. The DSP aims to provide first-year students with the most satisfying, exciting version of higher learning: small classes with engaging, challenging discussions and outstanding professors who are teaching about their work at the frontiers of knowledge.

This year, the showcase will welcome Bucky the Bugler, from Keeneland, who will play the famous post call on the bugle as he does at Keeneland before the races begin. He will be there as part of the presentation for the seminar, "My Kingdom is a Horse," which explored the horseracing industry in Kentucky, taught by UK School of Music professor Alan Hersh.

The showcase is free and open to the public. For further information, visit www.uky.edu/AS/Discovery.

The DSP is part of the UK Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence, a collaboration among prestigious undergraduate programs at the university, including Education Abroad, eUreKa!, the Honors Program, Intercollegiate Debate, Living-Learning Communities and the Office of External Scholarships.
