What Will You Do?

It's been said many times on UK's campus that "an involved student is a happy student is a successful student." Getting involved on campus, whether it be in a fraternity or sorority, a professional organization or a club sport, helps students make connections on campus and makes our large campus feel smaller.

"You have to figure out in this big community, in this big family that we have here at UK, what part you can play and where you can give your gifts and talents," Tyler Montell, former student government president, said.

"Get the most out of the college experience," encourages Ben Duncan, Interfraternity Council president. "There's so much more to the University of Kentucky than just going to class. There are all kinds of campus organizations and activities that are going on at night that require no commitment. You just come out, have fun and get to meet a whole lot of new people and experience things you never have."

Student Involvement at the University of Kentucky is located in the CSI, and no, we're not talking about the primetime television show. The CSI, or Center for Student Involvement, is home to the Center for Community Outreach, a student's connection point to volunteer opportunities; leadership development, helping shape our Commonwealth's next leaders; diversity education and community building; student media, including WRFL and Wildcat Student Television; and student organizations.

UK is home to more than 350 student organizations, and the cover a wide spectrum of interests. Six student organizations are supported through student fees, the Center for Community Outreach, Student Activities Board, Student Government, WRFL-FM, Wildcat Student Television and the Student Sustainability Council. These groups bring something unique to all of campus. Other student organizations include honor and leadership societies, professional and departmental clubs, political and government groups, international organizations, religious groups, sports and club teams and specialty clubs. While 350 organizations may seem like an intimidating number, K Week gives students a chance to find an organization that best suits them.

Hosted by Student Government, the Student Involvement Fair is a student's one-stop shopping experience for student organizations. From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 27), check out organizations' booths on the walkway from Rose Street to the Young Library. At the Student Involvement Fair, you'll be introduced to many of UK's student organizations and can get your questions answered by students who are involved in those organizations.

Here are a few other ways for you to get involved before K Week ends; if you miss out, don't worry! Visit getinvolved.uky.edu to be connected to student involvement at UK.
