UK Educators Join Livestreamed Panel Discussion of Kentucky Education During a Pandemic

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 31, 2020) An administrator and a faculty member from the University of Kentucky will join other experts in a panel discussion about education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Titled “Learning Curve: Navigating Education Access in a Pandemic,” the livestreamed discussion is offered by the Lexington Herald-Leader at 12:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Sept. 1. Registration is available at www.eventbrite.com/e/lexingtons-learning-curve-tickets-118069014601.

UK Associate Provost for Academic and Student Affairs Kirsten Turner and Associate Professor Lu Young of the UK College of Education and current chair of the Kentucky Board of Education will sit on the panel.

They join Gov. Andy Beshear; Bluegrass Community and Technical College President Koffi Akakpo; Council on Postsecondary Education President Aaron Thompson; Julian Tackett, executive director of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association; and Eddie Campbell, president of the Kentucky Education Association and a high school choir director in the Knox County Schools.

The Herald-Leader says the discussion will focus on the dilemmas of educating children in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak. The panelists will help viewers understand efforts to keep students safe and on track academically, athletically and emotionally in K-12 schools and in colleges and universities.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
