Campus Invited to Annual MLK Vigil

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 21, 2016)  The Martin Luther King Center invites the University of Kentucky campus community to its annual MLK Vigil Walk at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 21.

Participants will meet for a brief welcoming speech at 102 White Hall Classroom Building, then continue to an exterior location between White Hall and the Patterson Office Tower where a group of students will portray the inequalities in America’s educational system.

The walk continues to a location between White Hall and Lafferty Hall where students will portray wage inequality based on race and sex.

The third scene, on the pathway between Lafferty Hall and Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library, depicts wealth inequality.

The abuse of slaves will be related to current police brutality at the next stop on the tour, in front of Lafferty Hall and White Hall.

The tour next tackles the topic of mass incarceration in front of White Hall.

The next stop, in front of White Hall near Miller Hall, features America's "tug of war" with one student representing big corporations and a second student representing all Americans.

The seventh and final stop near Miller Hall focuses on UK students' depiction of  Black Lives Matter.

A program, featuring excerpts from Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream speech and a discussion of the various scenes recently witnessed, begins immediately following the tour in 102 White Hall.
