Sixty Days – One Exhibit

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 26, 2011) – Polaroids are instant pictures but can leave lasting memories, and that was the inspiration behind Louisville artist Letitia Quesenberry’s "Peeled Series" exhibit debuting in the Rasdall Gallery in the Student Center from Monday, Sept. 26, through Wednesday, Oct. 19. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free and sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

The "Peeled Series" began in early 2009 and incorporates the use of Polaroid self-portraits taken over a period of 60 consecutive days and meant initially to mark the passage of a difficult personal time in Quesenberry’s life. Years later, the photos were cut and peeled onto aluminum sheets creating images that blur the distinction between visibility and invisibility.

Quesenberry has exhibited her work in numerous venues across the United States including Smack Mellon in Brooklyn and the Speed Art Museum and 21c Museum both in Louisville. Her drawings can be found in the Drawing Center's curated Viewing Program and in Pierogi Gallery's Flat Files in Brooklyn. Quesenberry graduated with a bachelor's of fine art from the University of Cincinnati in 1993. She was born in Louisville, where she continues to live and work.

“I’m excited to bring a Louisville artist who has such high quality work. Quesenberry really has innovative photography and print making skills,” said Shannon Ruhl, director of SAB Cultural Arts Committee.

A reception will be held in the Rasdall Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Monday, Sept. 26. Refreshments will be provided.

The Student Activities Board brings more than 100 events to the University of Kentucky annually that enhance the college experience by providing students, other members of the campus and the Lexington community with entertaining, educational or enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends.
