UK celebrates Student Employee Appreciation Week April 10-14

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 7, 2023) — The National Student Employment Association has declared the second complete week in April each year be set aside to recognize the value of student employees and student employment professionals.

The University of Kentucky will celebrate its student workers during Student Employee Appreciation Week April 10-14.

UK Human Resources has partnered with the UK Office for Student Success for a series of events.

Additionally, supervisors are also encouraged to participate in the events and also show how much their student employees are appreciated in a variety of ways.

“Student employees are integral members of our teams in Student Success,” Kirsten Turner, vice president of the Office for Student Success, said. “Through their roles, they gain valuable work experience and financial support, while furthering the institution's mission of advancing Kentucky.”

The purpose of National Student Employee Appreciation Week is to:

  • Enhance awareness of student employment and its important role in the higher education experience.
  • Recognize students who perform outstanding work while attending college.
  • Thank the employers who hire students for part-time positions and make the student employment program such a success.

A Supervisor Recognition Toolkit is available with ideas and downloads supervisors can use to recognize employees. Supervisors are also encouraged to discuss the events and urge their student employees to attend.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
