Elizabeth Street South Lot repaving to begin this week
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 30, 2026) — The Elizabeth Street South Lot (formerly Press Avenue South) will double in size, adding 80 employee intermediate parking spaces. Weather permitting, the lot will be repaved and restriped Thursday, Oct. 1, through Friday, Oct. 2.
The lot is being expanded by approximately 24,000 square feet and will provide much-needed parking near the Elizabeth Street Garage (PS #6). A new entrance and exit also will be added off Elizabeth Street.
Repaving and restriping the lot will require a temporary closure. The project is expected to take approximately four days, with the lot reopening early Monday. Because the work is weather-dependent, those dates could change.
The parallel parking spaces along the existing access road leading from the Elizabeth Street Garage will not be affected and will remain available during the project.
“We think this project will make a big difference and ease some of the parking congestion on this side of campus,” said Sarah Nikirk, director of UK Transportation Services. “We know the Elizabeth Street Garage tends to fill early in the morning, so these additional spaces are much needed.”
The $850,000 project began after the university purchased and demolished an apartment building to make way for the expansion. Contractors also completed underground stormwater retention work and constructed a concrete retaining wall as part of the project.
