Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame Induction to be Held Oct. 17

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 8, 2012) — The Kentucky Commission on Human Rights will hold its Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame 2012 Induction Ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 17. The ceremony will take place from 2-4 p.m. at the historic Lyric Theatre at 300 E. Third St. in Lexington. A reception will follow.

The University of Kentucky is partnering with the commission to help sponsor the ceremony. David A. Brennen, dean of the UK College of Law, says UK's participation is part of the university's commitment to community involvement.

"This event honors those who worked, struggled and persevered to make Kentucky a better place for all of us," Brennen said. "The University of Kentucky is proud to join the Commission on Human Rights to help give these leaders and heroes of our community the recognition they deserve."

The Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame  was introduced in 2000, on the commission’s 40th anniversary, to recognize activists in Kentucky who have fought and sacrificed to accomplish civil and human rights for all people within the state and beyond. The commission has held inductions on a periodic basis since then.

This year, people from all over the state have nominated 33 candidates who have served as role models for equality and justice. They may represent present or past eras, and may be living or deceased.  An independent, all-volunteer panel of judges will choose the inductees.

Renee Shaw, news personality and host of “Connections with Renee Shaw” on the Kentucky Educational Television network, will officiate the ceremony. Commission Executive Director John J. Johnson, Chair George W. Stinson and other Kentucky Human Rights commissioners will participate. There will be musical and other performances.

The public is invited to the free event. However, seating is limited, and registration is required. To register or ask for more information, call commission representative Cynthia Fox at 1-800-292-5566 or (502) 595-4024, ext. 18.
