New Bike Lanes in the Works for Maxwell, Rose

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 3, 2011) — Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 3, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) will be adding bike lanes to East Maxwell Street, between South Limestone and Rose Street, and bike lanes and sharrows to Rose Street, between East Maxwell and Rose Lane. The project is jointly funded by the University of Kentucky and LFUCG and will result in a more interconnected campus and city bicycle network.

As a result of the projects, parking will be prohibited on both streets in the impacted area while the lanes are being painted. The project is expected to take two days. At the completion of the work, the parking on East Maxwell between South Limestone and Rose will move from the south side of the street to the north side, matching up with the new conditions on East Maxwell between Rose and Woodland Avenue. The parking spaces on Rose Street between East Maxwell and College View Avenue will be eliminated.

Improved bike infrastructure on campus and in the adjacent community will increase the viability of bicycling as an alternative to automobile commuting. Increased bicycle use ultimately leads to a healthier workforce, and has environmental benefits that extend well beyond the UK campus.
